# Claude in Chrome on SharePoint: I Tested It on Document Libraries

> Claude in Chrome can filter SharePoint libraries and learn a workflow like creating a document library. See what worked in my test and what to lock down first.

## Key takeaways

- Claude in Chrome can drive SharePoint through the browser: in my test it filtered a library on a Document Status column and returned the four expired documents.
- It kept context between libraries and, when a library had no Expired status, said so and listed the statuses that did exist.
- After I narrated the steps once, it saved a shortcut and created a new document library on its own.
- It works by screenshots and clicks, so a simple filter took 21 steps in my test. I'd keep it for occasional jobs in the interface and script anything in bulk.
- Verdict: useful for repetitive SharePoint admin in a test tenant first, with site access and approvals decided before anyone turns approvals off.

Claude in Chrome can work SharePoint for you through the browser. In my first test it opened a document library, filtered it on a Document Status column and returned the four expired documents, then learnt how to create a document library from my walkthrough and built a new one on its own. It gets there by taking screenshots and clicking through the same screens you would, so it's slow and literal, and I'd keep it in a test tenant until you've decided what it's allowed to touch.

Claude in Chrome is a Google Chrome extension available on all paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise). It acts inside your signed-in browser session, which means anything you can do in SharePoint, it can do too.

## What did I test, and on what setup?

I recorded this in December 2025, straight after installing the extension, so it was my first look at it while it was still in beta. The panel opens on the right of the browser, and there was a model picker at the top. The tenant was a demo tenant with a compliance site, two document libraries (Compliance, and Permits and Approvals) and a Document Status choice column on each.

I gave it three jobs: filter a library, repeat the filter on a second library without re-explaining, and learn a workflow I walked it through. In the video I said it would work in Edge as well. It doesn't. Claude in Chrome runs in Google Chrome only, not other Chromium browsers or mobile.

## Can Claude in Chrome filter a SharePoint library?

Yes. I asked it to navigate to the compliance document library, filter on the Document Status column and find the expired documents. Before touching anything it wrote a plan and waited for me to approve it. Once I did, an orange glow appeared around the browser window to show Claude had control.

From there it read the page, took a screenshot to work out where it was, opened the Document Status filter and picked Expired. It took 21 steps and finished with the four expired documents on screen and a summary of what it had done. I didn't touch the mouse.

## Does it keep context between SharePoint libraries?

It did in my test. My follow-up was "can you now please do the same thing to the permits and approvals document library", with no site, column or value repeated. It wrote a new plan, found the library and opened the same column filter.

The interesting bit was the data. Permits and Approvals doesn't have Expired as a Document Status choice. Claude took another screenshot to check the filter options, then reported that there were no expired documents in that library and listed the statuses that were available. It didn't pick the nearest value and pretend it matched.

## Can you teach Claude in Chrome a SharePoint workflow?

You can. First I switched on the setting that let it act without asking, which came with a warning that it moves you into high risk: Claude can take most actions on the internet and the setting could put your data at risk. I accepted it because this was a demo tenant, and I wouldn't in production.

Then I used Teach Claude and walked through creating a document library as if I was showing a new teammate: go to the home page, click New, choose Document library, choose Blank library, give it a name, click Create. I told it the name would change each time. Claude turned my narration into a shortcut, a saved prompt with the steps written out plus visual cues about what each screen looks like.

I ran the shortcut and asked for a library called "Claude test". It went to the home page, clicked New, chose Blank library, typed the name and clicked Create without asking me to confirm, then reported back with a screenshot of the new library. The shortcut then sat there as a slash command for next time.

The extension has moved on since I recorded this. Recording now appears as Record a workflow in the classic side panel, saved shortcuts run when you type "/" in the chat, and the approval settings have been reworked, so the labels you see won't match my video exactly. Recording isn't available when the side panel runs as a Claude Cowork session.

## What didn't work as well?

Nothing failed in my test, but the method has costs. Twenty-one steps for a filter you could apply in a few clicks, or save once as a view, is a lot of screenshots and round trips. Every action happens through the interface, so it's no faster than you are, and it's working from what's visible on screen rather than from SharePoint's data directly.

## Decide what it may touch before you switch off the approvals

1. **Start in a test tenant.** Claude in Chrome uses your session and your permissions. It doesn't get access you don't already have, but it can do everything you can, so letting it act without asking belongs in a demo or test tenant until you trust the workflow.
2. **Set site access centrally.** On Team and Enterprise plans, admins can switch the extension on or off for the organisation and keep an allowlist and blocklist of sites Claude can reach. Decide where your SharePoint domain sits on those lists before people find the extension for themselves.
3. **Pick jobs that only exist in the interface,** like creating the odd library or applying a filter someone can't remember how to set. For a filter you use often, save a view. For provisioning at volume, script it, the way I had [Claude Code deploy a SharePoint term store from Excel](https://www.danielanderson.io/articles/claude-code-sharepoint-term-store/). For questions about content, Copilot in SharePoint is already in the page, and [what Copilot in SharePoint can do now](https://www.danielanderson.io/articles/copilot-in-sharepoint-features-tested/) covers how far it reaches.
4. **Give it columns to work with.** The filter only worked because the libraries had a Document Status column with clear choices. Status in a column gives it a clear filter to click. I'd expect it to struggle more if that information lived only in folder or file names. [SharePoint folders vs metadata](https://www.danielanderson.io/articles/sharepoint-folders-vs-metadata/) covers why columns win.

For a different way to bring Claude's work into SharePoint, I added one of Anthropic's own skill files to a site in [using Claude skills in SharePoint](https://www.danielanderson.io/articles/claude-skills-in-sharepoint/).

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Claude in Chrome work in Microsoft Edge?**
No. Anthropic supports it in Google Chrome only, not in Edge or other Chromium-based browsers, and not on mobile. If your organisation standardises on Edge, people will need Chrome installed to use it.

**Can Claude in Chrome run SharePoint tasks on a schedule?**
It has scheduled tasks, set from the clock icon at the top right of the extension panel, with daily, weekly, monthly and annual options. I haven't tested a scheduled task against SharePoint, and it would run with the same permissions as the person who set it up.

**Can an admin turn Claude in Chrome off?**
Yes, on Team and Enterprise plans. The Enable for your team toggle sits under Organization settings, Claude in Chrome, and it's on by default. Enterprise organisations with HIPAA enabled have it off until an Owner switches it on.
